South Gloucestershire as an area sits within a number of other geographical footprints such as the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and Integrated Care System (ICS). Within South Gloucestershire, there are also various ways organisations cluster to deliver services across the patch. The maps below illustrate some of these footprints to support planning and aid users to understand what areas these clusters cover, and how they overlap.

South Gloucestershire in the wider context

The Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Integrated Care System, known as Healthier Together, brings together a range of partner organisations to help people to stay happy, healthy and well. Integrated Care Systems are also designed to ensure that health and care services join up around individual needs – breaking down the boundaries between physical health, mental health and social care services.

Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) are responsible for the day-to-day running of the NHS. In BNSSG, the ICB is split into 6 Locality Partnerships, one of which is South Gloucestershire. Locality Partnerships work at a local level with their communities, to improve health and wellbeing, and design services that fit in with people’s lives.

The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) was set up in 2017 to make decisions and investments that benefit people living and working in Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. It aims to deliver economic growth for the region and address challenges such as productivity and skills, housing and transport. Please note that North Somerset is not part of the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) Committee, but is part of the West of England Joint Committee, see WECA FAQs.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service is governed by Avon Fire Authority, which is a Combined Fire Authority, consisting of Elected Members of local councils from across the former Avon area, which includes: Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. The Fire Authority oversees the policy and service delivery of the fire and rescue service following various legislative requirements.

These local authorities, formerly the Avon area, are now commonly referred to as the West of England.

The Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP) is the lead provider of healthcare for people with serious mental illness, learning disabilities and autism in inpatient and community-based settings across Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire, and BNSSG.

Avon and Somerset Police is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement in the five unitary authority areas of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Somerset, and South Gloucestershire.

The Western Gateway is a pan-regional partnership to bring together local leaders from South Wales and Western England, including South Gloucestershire. Their workstreams include supporting the UK’s move to Net Zero, improving connections for local communities, supporting innovation, and attracting inward investment.

South Gloucestershire’s areas by service

Click on each of the tabs below to view approximations of how South Gloucestershire services are split geographically. Use your mouse wheel or the buttons in the top left-hand corner to zoom in and out, and hover over areas on the map to view area codes or names.

Primary Care Networks (PCNs) are not geographically defined areas and the above map is an approximate representation of where patients in each PCN live. LSOAs (2011) were allocated based on which South Gloucestershire PCN had the highest proportion of patients in that LSOA (source: Personal Demographic Service, December 2023). Please note that LSOAs outside of South Gloucestershire were excluded. Concord Mendip PCN, which is spread across Bristol City and South Gloucestershire, has more patients living in Bristol which are not shown on the map.

The Social care clusters mapped here are approximate, therefore they may not align exactly to where services are provided or received.

Clusters were determined using a postcode lookup provided by the adult social care team. These were used to allocate each small area (LSOA, 2021) to a cluster. In some cases, using this approach, an area could have feasibly been allocated to two or more clusters. Where this was the case, the cluster with the highest number of post codes was selected. This was the case for 22 out of 168 areas.

The Early Help Community Network (EHCN)/Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) clusters drawn above are approximate, and their boundaries were determined by mapping school locations in relation to Wards (2021). Use the buttons in the top right-hand corner to switch views and see where schools are located. Mostly, each Ward contains only schools from a single cluster. There were two exceptions for this in Frenchay & Downend and Patchway Coniston, which have one school from a different cluster each. Please note that areas are defined only based on the schools’ locations, not their pupils, and therefore may not reflect where pupils actually live.
